SammyWiki Editing Guide
For a detailed guide on how to edit wiki based pages, please check out the official documentation. A good starting point is here.
Mediawiki Resources
Participating
Without the help of contributors around the world this site could not work - we need help in creating all kinds of articles from specific product pages to guides and "how to" walk throughs.
However, as this is an independent self funding site we don't have a lot of resources to monitor and control wiki edits. Therefore only signed in members of SammyWiki.com are able to edit pages at present. Just register here it's free and quick!
The site will be updated with increased spam protection in the future and at that point the wiki will be opened up to non-members.
Acceptable Content
As per the sites terms and conditions, it should go without saying that all content should be appropriate and legal. We strictly recognise copyright laws and all members are invited to report anything that might have been copied without consent immediately so that the site administrators can check and remove the offending content.
This wiki exists to provide a fun and light hearted overview of Samsung products for fans and enthusiasts. Please ensure that your content meets the "spirit" of the SammyWiki site. Due to lack of resources, anyone who disappoints the trust placed in them by the administrators will have their editing rights removed and it may be some time before we get round to reinstating them - if at all. Save us all some time and edit carefully.
This is not Wikipedia, so an informal fun writing style is fine.
Photos
Please ensure that you have appropriate copyright approval before using any photos. This site does not allow the upload of photos at the present time although I hope to upgrade my hosting package to enable this when funds allow.
Please use flickr as an image hosting service. External images from other sites will not show, if you want to add a site to the allowed list then let me know.
Users are encouraged to take and use their own photos - after all this is a community site and it is always great to see people getting involved in this way. Using our own photos means there is no problem with copyright, but please only contribute if you are happy for this site to use your photo freely.
Appropriate Editing
The strength of a wiki is collaborative effort, this means everyone has the ability to edit your work to make it better. What you post here will be open to editing or addition, keep in mind that the end goal is the best information possible and this should help alleviate any "sting" you may feel of having your article edited.
That said please also be courtious of the works of others. "Slash and Burn" editing is both discouraged and really rather rude. Editors and Content Creators on Wikis spend a significant amount of time on their contributions. Turning around and seeing half of what they wrote massively edited and changed, or worse yet deleted, is discouraging. Feel free to ADD to content that is out there, and feel free to update information.
Use the "discussion" pages on articlas for MAJOR changes to the article. If you feel the entire article is wrong or no longer applies, instead of simply deleting the page (which would be bad) post a comment in the discussion section stating what you feel needs to be done and post a comment in the article itself stating that the information might be out of date.
Structure
The main page will link out to the key Samsung product areas. Each of these main areas will have a portal page. Please see the Computing example for a guide on how to create your own. Within each product area there is another level of portal for specific types of product, for example Netbooks. From here you can link out to individual products that will have their own page.
If you are creating guides and "how to" articles please consider at what portal level you should link to. A guide to choosing a netbook might be at the Netbook level but a guide to installing a touch screen on the Samsung NC10 will be at the product level.
Style
Please try to keep to a common style for core portal pages. Think about setting out the page with tables and well defined areas. Product articles will be more straight forward. However contributors are encouraged to put their own twist on their own specific articles if they feel like it!
This site uses the Mediawiki wiki software as used by the well known Wikipedia site. There are many resources and guides on how to create and edit pages there, a good starting point is the how to edit page.
User Pages
All registered users will have their own user page, for example User:Jez. Users are able to create their own sub pages if they want to add a personal review or opinion piece. Please note that articles should be relevant and constructive. You may link to personal blogs and projects but blatant self promotion and spam is unacceptable.
Any article that is overtly controversial, inappropriate or off topic will be deleted upon sight. Although the sammy wiki does provide this facility it is not meant to be a personal blog site. If you wish to publish your own thoughts in an unrestricted manner then the best solution is to start your own blog!
