Samsung's Tocco Lite: Perfect for the Casual and Trendy Consumer

Overview

Samsung’s Tocco Lite is perfect for consumers looking for the sleekness of a touch screen mobile phone without the usual astronomical price-tag. In fact, in comparison to its competitors, the Tocco Lite is among the most affordable of touch screen mobile phones on the UK market. But affordability does not necessarily translate to perfection, as the Tocco Lite does have its limitations.

Overall, the Tocco Lite is a proper choice for users who want a modern phone without paying modern prices, and are also willing to sacrifice some modern functions. For those can overlook a few limitations, the Tocco Lite is a great choice because of its affordability, fashionable touch screen interface, and basic Internet access. In the UK, the Tocco Lite enjoys widespread popularity, with over 10 million units sold as of November 2010. Plans are available with T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile, and other mobile providers.

Functionality

The Tocco Lite’s appearance is modern and trendy. Weighing just 92g, the Tocco Lite is remarkably light and portable. Overall, the phone is quite small, including the touch screen, but this does not seem to affect the phone’s functionality. Aside from the touch screen, there are only three buttons (call, back, and end) on the bottom of the Tocco Lite. This keeps the Tocco Lite’s interface the way it should be: easy, clean, and simple. The Tocco Lite also doubles as a portable music player with its MP3 capabilities. And with its microSD memory card, the Tocco Lite has an expansive 16GB memory capacity.

The Tocco Lite comes with a 3.2-megapixel camera, complete with smile detection capabilities, digital zoom, and photo effects. In terms of camera quality, 3.2-megapixels is considered average to mid-range in today’s mobile phone market. This drawback would likely be minor for most consumers, unless quality photos are of upmost priority for you. Tocco Lite also records video at 15 frames per second. A useful feature is the Tocco Lite’s built-in accelerometer that automatically senses and rotates the phone’s interface. While this might seem like a futile feature, it certainly comes in handy when rotating the camera between portrait and landscape positions.

While the phone does come with an Internet browser and many of Samsung’s widgets and applications, it is not 3G enabled, meaning browsing the Internet is notably slower than on competing mobile phones. Of course, not all users need 3G access. For users who plan to browse the Internet more sparingly, the Tocco Lite is a solid choice. However, if you plan on accessing the Internet often, and especially if you plan on accessing multimedia-rich content, then the Tocco Lite’s lack of 3G connectivity might prove to be irritating.

While the Internet connection might not be the best, some of the Tocco Lite’s widgets include access to websites like Facebook, Myspace, and Youtube. There is even a widget that provides the most up to date weather information. Critics have noted, however, that the widgets’ icons are too large, meaning only three icons can fit on the screen at a time. Furthermore, it is hard to imagine even surfing Youtube on a mobile phone without a 3G connection. For many users, the Youtube widget might be useless and its content unwatchable.
