Overview
The Samsung Omnia II is a full-fledged smart phone running on Windows Mobile. It is targeted at business-minded people demanding an elite level of phone for the workplace, but may also desire more recreation. As the successor to the Omnia, which received generally good reviews but had much room for improvement, the phone has drawn quite a bit of anticipation. Several features, such as the Touch Whiz interface, have been overhauled for this Samsung outing.
Windows Mobile allows for unmatched connectivity and compatibility with the popular computer operating system. However, the operating system is noted to be inherently slow to run and difficult to navigate without a stylus. The updates to the software have been engineered to address these issues. The phone boasts an AMOLED (or Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen. This technology is an evolution of LED technology, and offers extreme brightness and minimized power consumption compared to other screens. Compared to other smart phones, the phone is large, measuring 2.3 inches wide, 4.7 inches tall, and .5 inches deep. It weighs in at around 5 ounces. The size results in a very large screen, and for good reason. The resolution is an impressive 800x480, and the screen measures 3.7 inches diagonally.
Features
Primary distinguishing features on the phone are in the realm of multimedia and user interface. The revamped Touch Whiz 2.0 interface consists of a side scrolling widget bar, which can be expanded and allows widgets to be removed and dropped on the phone’s home screen. Unlike the original Touch Whiz, the new model features more expandability, with a “widget store” closely modeling the popular App Store feature of other smart phones. For text input, Samsung has not included a full QWERTY keyboard, opting instead to keep the phone with a thin profile and overhauling the standard virtual keyboard with Swype technology. The new entry mode allows typists to trace their fingers over the screen’s keys that they wish to select in order, after which the phone’s algorithm will guess the word that was being attempted. The last piece of innovation present is in the cube interface for multimedia. All types of media are assigned to a specific face of the cube, with appropriate apps being instantly accessible for launch from the faces of the cube. The software intends to simplify and streamline the often complicated multimedia process of modern smart phones. The phone features a video capable camera that claims to have camcorder resolution, and indeed does support several formats, such as WMV and MPEG-4. It also features micro SD expandability up to 16 gigabytes, and contains a GPS tracking unit.

Samsung Omnia 2 Reviews
Critical reception was overall quite positive, with the revamped Touch Whiz interface being especially lauded. CNET gave the phone 4 stars, stating that “Overall, TouchWiz 2.0 makes much more sense”. Most critics found the Swype method of typing to be surprisingly effective for the most part, and indeed such a method of input has already been tried with mild success through a third-party iPhone app. The main detraction for the phone comes in its performance in its applications, possibly due to the choice to employ the chronically maligned Widows Mobile. Despite the lack of blazing speed that some devices enjoy, the device still enjoyed positive reviews, and is an excellent successor to the Omnia.
