Overview

Samsung bills its Jet mobile phone as “smarter than a Smartphone.” The Jet itself is not a Smartphone, but it does have some high-end features commonly associated with smartphones, like multimedia functions and Microsoft exchange programs. The Jet is also significantly cheaper than the standard smartphone, like the Apple iPhone 3G. This does not necessarily make the Jet, however, a smartphone replacement, as it is still a feature-phone.

The Samsung Jet is the perfect choice for the consumer looking for a high-end and functional multimedia phone, while sacrificing some of the advanced functions typical of smartphones. In the UK, the Jet is available with 3G connectivity.

Features

One of the first features you might notice about the Samsung Jet, aside from its remarkably fast 800MHz processor, is the 16 million-color display on the 480x800 pixel resolution. On the Jet, graphics and photos are absolutely eye-catching and beautiful.

The phone comes with an extremely fast 5.0-megapixel flash camera. There are also a breadth of photo effects and editing capabilities. The Jet records video at a 30 frames per second rate. The photo quality is said to be above average, although videos are a bit blurry. The Jet also has an MP3 player, and with its 3.5mm headphone jack, the Jet could double as an iPod replacement. And you don’t have to worry about running out of filespace for all your favorite music. The Jet comes with 2GB of built in memory, which is probably more than enough for many users. For those who require more space, the Jet has a built-in microSD slot that could easily increase the Jet’s storage potential.

On the Jet’s touch screen, you have the ability to “swipe” and browse through your 3 homepages. This is a feature very similar to the Apple iPhone and the Google Android. On these different pages, you can put whatever you want, including your choice of Samsung widgets. Some critics aren’t completely satisfied with Samsung’s collection of widgets. Although the Jet does come complete with a variety of widgets, and there are more available for download on Samsung’s website, the Jet does not allow you to create your own widgets.

Motiongate is another of the Jet’s great features. It allows you to use the Jet’s accelerometer sensor to program motions with functions on the phone. For example, you could program your Jet to open a particular widget when you shake the phone or tap the side of the phone. This convenient feature would allow you quick and easy access to the programs you use most often.

A nifty feature is Etiquette Pause. If you’re on a call and wish to mute your phone, simply place the Jet face down. Another interesting feature is Speaker Call, which allows you to switch your call over to speakerphone by simply laying the Jet face-up on a flat surface. Both of these features can be deactivated.

Mediagate is a feature you might fight a bit less practical. It is a six-sided 3D cube that appears on the main screen and allows access to all of the Jet’s media functions, like the photo album and FM radio. While some might like this feature, all of the same media functions are available from the Jet’s main menu, rendering Mediagate pointless.

Criticisms

The s8000 lacks the genuine smartphone capabilities found in the high end product lines, the microSD slot is hard to reach as it is under the back cover, smart dialing only works for numbers, not contact names and there is no preinstalled GPS navigation software
