Samsung (which means "three stars" in Korean) started out as a small export business in Taegu, Korea, back in the 1930s and has since grown to become one of the world's leading electronics manufacturers. The company is actually made up of a number of smaller businesses with very diverse interests, including finance, hotels, construction, fashion and medicine. Most of us will know the products of the flagship Samsung Electronics company - a leader in the global high-tech market.

The History of Samsung

  • 1938 - Founded by Byung-Chull Lee on March 1st in Taegu, Korea. The business started out selling dried Korean fish, vegetables and fruit!
  • 1951 - SAMSUNG Moolsan established (now SAMSUNG Corporation)
  • 1969 - SAMSUNG-Sanyo Electronic established
  • 1970s - Diversified into heavy, chemical and petrochemical industries, thus laying the foundations for the future
  • 1980s - Continued expansion during this time saw Samsung become a global company
  • 1990s - In the early part of the decade Samsung saw many products gain leading market share in fields from computer monitors to semiconductors. The latter half of the decade saw difficult financial conditions throughout Korea but Samsung pulled through after restructuring.
  • Present - Samsung has continued to innovate and develop to firmly establish itself as a leader of the digital technology industry
