Preparation

  • Download the Windows 7 RC .iso file.
  • Obtain a cd key for it and write it down on a piece of paper.
  • Unpack the .iso on your NC10 to a temporary folder using a tool like WinRar.

If you want to dual boot Windows 7 and XP you need a secondary partition to install Windows 7 on. This is HIGHLY recommended instead of overwriting XP.

  • Download Easeus Partition Master and run it.
  • Resize the existing C partition so there is 20-30 Gbs of unallocated space.
  • Create a new partition using this free space. This is where we'll install Windows 7.
  • Apply the changes and reboot.

Installation

  • Plug in the NC10 power supply.
  • Run setup.exe from the folder where you unpacked the .iso earlier.
  • Make sure you select the new partition as the location to install when asked!
  • Fill out name, timezone, locale, cd key and so on.
  • Wait for the install to finish, it'll reboot several times during it.

Windows 7 is now installed. Whenever you reboot there will now be a prompt to run either Windows 7 or "A previous version of Windows" aka Windows XP. If you feel the prompt is annoying and makes rebooting take longer you can use hibernation mode instead of shutting down completely.

Updates

To get the most out of Windows 7 we need to install some software updates. See links on NC10_Windows_7.

  • Run Windows Update. You may have to reboot and run it again several times to get all the important updates.
  • Install Easy Display Manager. This enables most of the Fn keys and the visual popup when you press them. Make sure it starts when Windows starts by copying its shortcut to the Startup folder in the Start menu (the installer somehow fails at doing this automatically).
  • Install Easy Battery Manager. This is not a program like on XP, but a profile for the built-in power management.
  • Install the other drivers on NC10_Windows_7.

Things to check out

  • You might want to change some of the default settings, like turning off UAC and Aero, modifying the power profile details, getting rid of the Language Bar and such.
  • The search bar on the Start menu doesn't just search files but also searches Windows features, so you can type in things like "turn off uac" or "aero" and get meaningful responses.
  • Win+X launches the new Mobility Center with shortcuts for stuff that's useful on netbooks.
  • Win+P easily switches output between the screen and the VGA plug.
  • The new icon look for the taskbar makes it well suited to being on the left or right of the screen instead of at the bottom, which saves valuable vertical space. Right-click the taskbar -> Properties to move it.
  • The taskbar also functions as an integrated quicklaunch bar, you can pin or unpin programs by right-clicking them.
  • Right-clicking on programs in the taskbar also shows shortcuts related to the program like favourites. Only the built-in programs seem to support this "jump list" feature yet though.
  • The new version of My Documents is Libraries, which combines folders located in different places into one topic like Documents or Pictures.
  • You can generate a power efficenecy report by running powercfg /energy in a command prompt.
