How To:Partition a Netbook Hard Disk

From Samsung Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

There are a number of reasons why you might want to partition a netbook. You may wish to do it purely for organisational purposes, for example to create a seperate drive for your personal files. This has the advantage of creating a clear line for running your backups - software and operating systems can be reinstalled, but even the most minimal backup strategy must back up your own files.

Others might want to create partitions to help organise multiple operating systems, for example those wishing to run Linux alongside Windows or trial Windows 7.

Beginners should note that partioning is not a necessity. If you are reading this wondering what it is all about then rest assured you can live without this level of organisation! However there are certain benefits so if you are keen to learn more please read on!

Setting up your Hard Disk

Ideally you will map out your drive structure before setting up your netbook. It is much easier to get things right from the start rather than move things around later. That said, there are software packages that will allow you to manage partitions at a later stage but you might find this limits options or introduces a small risk of corruption.

A reasonable setup might be to have a partition for the Operating System and Program Files with a second one for personal working files, for example documents and personal photos. Some might also have further partions for storing games, downloaded media or an archive of downloaded install files. Again this can help backups as you will want to make frequent backups of your creative work but have a less regular schedule for downloaded content.

What size is good? Well with the standard 160gb drives on the N-series Samsung range you might want to think in the region of 50gb/100gb split for the operating system and your file storage. Ultimately it will depend on what software you want to install and how you will use your netbook.
