The Samsung HMX-U20 Smart Pocket Camcorder is an entry into the relatively new market of simple, ultraportable camcorders pioneered by by the Flip series of cameras. Like its predecessors, the HMX-U20 is small enough to fit into your pocket and wields one click recording and sharing. Unlike many others, it also boasts a 3X optical zoom and features full HD video support. Also, unlike many others, its primary storage medium is an SD/SDHC card. Most come with integrated memory. It also features the ability to take photographs.
==Overview==
First released on February 20, 2010, the HMX has received mixed reviews from most who own the product. While easy to use, the device is plagued with problems. One known issue, for example, is a clicking sound that is recorded on the audio. Also, while having optical zoom, only digital zoom is available when recording video. Another problem that is not noted is that High definition video recording is only possible on some SD/SDHC cards. The reason being that high definition video requires high data transfer speeds, while most cheaper SD/SDHC cards only transfer data slowly. The result is that the lower resolution video is blown up in size to resemble the high definition video. Another problem is that, while the high definition video is theoretically possible, the plastic lens results in inferior, blurred video. And while the device features a handy USB arm for tethering to your computer, the software required to interface with the device is Windows only, and by most accounts buggy.
Despite all its flaws, the HMX-U20 is a decent device for its price point and age. Not all owners have noticed a clicking sound, meaning that it could be that there are a large number of defective devices or that the problem has been fixed in newer iterations. Its easy sharing features makes it simple to upload the video to social media networks, which is the purpose these devices were designed for.
Samsung's HMX-U20 Smart Pocket Camcorder is a cheap but flawed entry into the pocket camcorder market. While it is technically able to do what it advertises, the problems that it displays limits its real world usability. A video camera that records clicks on its audio track, for example, fails to be useful in most situations it would be used. And its inferior lens and tricky high definition recording help to remove the few cases where audio is not as important as the video.
'''Pros''':
*Easy to use
*SD/SDHC storage allows for swapping cards when device is full
*Easy sharing to social networks
*3X optical zoom
*user replaceable battery
*cheap
'''Cons''':
*Some report clicking sound recorded on audio
*No optical zoom when recording video
*High definition video recording requires a class 10 SD/SDHC card
*cheap lens
*buggy software
